Spring Gardening Calendar
April
- Remove tree wrap as soon as snow melts
- Cut back ornamental grasses and other perennials left for winter interest
- Remove rose cones
- Divide and transplant overgrown perennials
- Till or spade flower and vegetable garden beds, adding compost, soil conditioners, amd slow-release fertilizers
- Plant frost-tolerant pansies for early spring color
- Start planting trees and shrubs as soon as ground is dry enough for digging
May
- Plant annuals after chance of frost has finally passed (average last frost date is May 8th)
- Apply Fertilome Crabgrass Preventer Plus Lawn Food in early May after first mowing and then water in
- Work fertilizer into veggie and flower gardens before planting
- Fertilize roses and begin spraying for black spot and mildew
- Mulch garden beds to help conserve moisture and reduce weed growth
- Set up peony hoops
- Protect plants from hungry deer and rabbits by spraying Liquid Fence or other repellant
- Plant summer-blooming bulbs such as gladiolas, cannas, and callas
- Sprinkle Preen or other pre-emergent weed control in garden beds
- Remove leaves and debris collecting underneath evergreens and shrubs
- Prune spring-blooming shrubs such as forsythia, azaleas, and lilacs after they've flowered
- Use fruit tree spray on apple trees after blossoms drop
