Thistles galore!

My garden is looking good! Even the thistles are starting to bloom. They really could be a pretty flower if they weren't so prickly and spread so well. Those Scots love thistles a lot more than I do, as it is their national flower. In the 15th century, the the thistle was a symbol of defense. In my college days, I had the opportunity to study for a semester in Scotland. It was a wonderful experience to travel around seeing different landscapes and to feel the different seasons of weather. It also made me appreciate all gardens, thistles or not.

In all reality, there are a few thistles in the garden. Every night, I work on an area and send several thistles to thistle heaven. Soon the buggers will be gone and my pumpkins and squash will be overtaking the garden. The wonders of plants never cease to amaze me! How a pumpkin can grow 6 to 8 inches in a day, especially on hot and humid days, I will never be able to fathom. It is amazing to see how the plants grow. I can't wait to see the first pumpkins form on those long vines. My squash and cucumbers are showing fruit and I'll soon have fresh zucchini to grill. Until then, I'll be tackling those weeds one at a time. Happy Weeding to all and to all a good weeder! (weeder is a great tool that makes weeding a lot easier.)
