Wendy's Garden Journal
October 30th, 2006
Winter can be very trying on our gardens, especially newly planted trees, shrubs, and evergreens. These plants appreciate a good drink of water. Watering will increase the soil moisture and keep plants from drying out during the winter. Water once a week until the ground freezes. When done with your watering each time, be sure to wrap up your hose in case it freezes.
Rhododendrons and evergreens with sensitive needles will also need a little extra protection to withstand the drying winter winds. Spray needles with Wilt-Pruf, which will create a barrier to keep needles from drying out. Dwarf Alberta Spruce is an extremely sensitive evergreen, and it winters over best by being wrapped in burlap for the winter. If you are not sure if you should protect your plants, stop in and we’ll tell you the best ways to winter over plants in your landscape.
Also sending a reminder to put any unused chemicals in a place where the products will not freeze. If frozen the chemical properties can change.
Change out those scarecrows for ghouls in the garden!
Happy Halloween!
