All plants need nutrients to grow big and beautiful! Essential nutrients exist naturally in the soil, but all are not available to the plant, therefore, additional fertilizer is beneficial for bigger blooms and stronger plants. The three primary nutrients are N (nitrogen), P (phosphorous), and K (potassium). N promotes foliage growth by stimulating chlorophyll production. P is utilized primarily for flowers, fruit, stem, and root production, while K is critical for the general health of the plant and aids in digesting and manufacturing their food. Too much fertilizer can harm plants, burning or even killing them. Check your soil to see what you need to add. Plants can be specific to what they need. For example, grass thrives with nitrogen, while roses and annuals love phosphorous. Look at labels when purchasing fertilizers and ask questions. For example, have you ever wondered what the difference is between fertilizer you mix with water and fertilizers you sprinkle around the plant? Water soluble fertilizers must be mixed with water and are fast-acting but need to be applied more frequently. Granular fertilizers are sprinkled and last longer but are a bit slower in delivering nutrients to the plant. Both are effective. I recommend the granular types for perennials. You can also use it in hanging baskets and containers. Water soluble fertilizers are great for annuals, apply it once a week for healthy, vigorous plants with tons of color.
