Spring weather has been a rollercoaster! Record warm temperatures a few weeks ago quickly turned back to a chilly winter again. Before the cold snap, I was enjoying the early identifiers of spring- the birds, the tulips poking up, a few purple crocus blooming, and some perennials anxiously pushing out of the ground. After enjoying the sun here, I boarded a plane to Florida for sunshine and even warmer weather. Shrubs were blooming in intense colors and brightened every home, business, and pathway. Seeing these plants in full bloom in April was inspiring! I will be planting more tropical plants in my landscape and containers this year. Bougainvillea, hibiscus, mandevilla, cannas, and gardenias all are fragrant, brightly colored and easy to care for. These tropical plants will be showstoppers near your patio or front steps, where you can enjoy them as much as possible!
As you are thinking about new possibilities for the year, you may also be wondering if your perennials will come back after being frozen the other night. Rest assured, your plants will have enough energy to push up more growth. Bleeding hearts, daylilies, sedums, and some other perennials that were awakened with the warm temperatures will be fine. If we get a cold snap again, cover the new growth with a light blanket or plastic bag. This will help prevent the foliage from freezing.
Spring is here and warm weather is right around the corner!
