During all the snowstorms this past week, I was able to curl up inside with a few books. The Truth About Garden Remedies by
Jeff Gillman was very interesting, and I think you will find the discussions he has on each remedy quite interesting. The book discussed fertilizers for the garden, including beer and eggshells, and applying vinegar to weeds to act as a herbicide. Throughout the book, the author measures real recommendations by people to see what works and what does not work in the garden. Many of the remedies for insects and fungal problems, I had been aware of, but I was surprised to see the number of household ingredients that are recommended. Vinegar, eggshells, baking soda, garlic, and buttermilk are just a few items found in the kitchen. When it came to the kitchen and the garden, I only relate the two for a place to grow and a place to chop up and cook my herbs. Throughout the book, you will find a bit of humor and seriousness with each topic. If you are looking for some light reading, it is a book for you.
In other reading, I have been looking through garden magazines and flower books. With so many new and unusual plants this year, my garden is going to get a make-over!
Spring is not too far now…
