Fall Gardening Calendar
September
- Plant and transplant trees, shrubs, and evergreens now when temperatures are cooler and plants will still have up to two months to settle in and spread roots before they go dormant. Use Bonide Root & Grow to promote healthy root development and ease transplant shock
- Plant spring-flowering bulbs such as allium, bearded iris, crocus, daffodils, hyacinths, and tulips, and work bone meal or bulb food into the bottom of planting holes for better growth
- Early September is the ideal time to seed new lawn, patch bare spots, and lay sod since competition with weed seeds is minimal
-Plant mums, pansies, asters, and flowering kale for fall color
October
- Apply Fertilome Winterizer to the lawn for a healthier root system, so the grass comes up faster and greener next spring
- Wrap young trees to protect from sunscald, frost cracking, and animals
- Clean garden beds and work compost into soil for spring plantings
- Pull out dead annuals from beds and containers and add them to compost
- Cover tender hybrid tea roses before temperatures dip below 25 degrees
- Rake and remove leaves to improve air circulation and lawn disease control
- Continue to mow lawn until frost halts growth (tall, matted grass encourages snow mold)
November
- Cover tender and newly planted perennials with mulch to protect from freezing and thawing. Lay marsh hay (has no weed seeds, unlike straw) over shallow-rooted perennials to prevent frost heaving
- Empty containers so temperature fluctuations don't cause pots to crack
- Continue watering trees, shrubs, and evergreens until ground freezes
- Purchase houseplants such as Christmas Cactus to bring the outdoors in!
