Carole Kinion-Copeland
Artist Carole Kinion Copeland invites you to take a closer look at a variety of Natural Science illustrations. Carole’s style is very detailed, often singling out individual subjects such as flowers or insects. She uses watercolor, pen and ink as well as mixed media. Her mixed media includes layering gouasch, pastel and colored pencil to render very realistic subject matter.
A graduate of the University of Wisconsin- River Falls, Carole has a Bachelor of Science degree in Art with a Biology emphasis. Although some of her work is very scientific it is intended for the common layperson.
Carole’s parents inspired her interest and love of nature from an early age. Another influential person was naturalist/phenologist and author, James R. Gilbert. Carole began working with Gilbert in high school. She collaborated with him to illustrate several publications he wrote including “Spring Signs”, “Jim Gilbert’s Nature Notebook”, and several editions of the “WCCO Weatherguide”.

Carole has been a successful freelance artist since 1975 and is a member of the Guild of Natural Science Illustrators. She exhibited in the Lobby Gallery at the The Rochester Civic Theatre in the spring of 2001. The summers of 2002 & 2004 Carole exhibited in Alma, WI at Sundown East Gallery. In January of 2003 she had a solo exhibit at Crossings at Carnegie in Zumbrota and has since participated in many jurried shows there. Carole has exhibited at the 2002-2005 Rochester Mayowood Garden Tours. In January 2004 she participated in a jurried exhibit at the Minnesota Valley National Wildlife Refuge Visitors Center. The show sponsored by G.A.I.N. (Gathering of Artists and Illustrators of Nature) displayed 3 of her original works. In June-August 2006 she exhibited an original work “Slimy Slug” in the G.A.I.N. jurried show at the Bell Museum of Natural History.
Carole welcomes commissions. She lives in Oronoco with her family and enjoys gardening. “It is my goal to inspire people to take a closer, more intimate look at nature,” says Carole.
